Spiritual Retreats.
A spiritual retreat is an experience of mind and body lasting a definite period of time spent usually in a solitary place, alone or with others, accompanied by a variety of exercises, such as, prayer, penance, reflection, self-evaluation, and discernment. A Spiritual Retreat is always a personal experience aimed at determining one’s state of mind and soul, and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit in all that pertains to one’s spiritual growth.
Strictly speaking, the ultimate purpose of a spiritual retreat is to place oneself under the guidance of the Holy Spirit in order to improve one’s spiritual life, facilitate the attainment of holiness and achieve a more loving relationship with God, other human beings and the whole universe.
WHO SHOULD MAKE A SPIRITUAL RETREAT?
A Spiritual Retreat is an experience beneficial for everyone who can understand the importance of being good and the necessity of avoiding evil. Any person, especially young, would find a Spiritual Retreat a very good experience capable of assisting in the building of a solid knowledge and love of one’s spiritual life, a good moral character, and the habit of cultivating the growth of a devout relationship with God.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MAKE A SPIRITUAL RETREAT?
In the course of everyday living in our contemporary world, filled with all kinds of stresses, different and at times contradictory ideas and values, with the reduced emphasis on moral and spiritual values, with powerful and seductive campaigns intended to win our attention and our allegiance, it is imperative that we find places and voices that can help us to regain our composure and our tranquility, our peace and our balance so to avoid falling victim to the secularization forces that are at work all around us.
This is true for everyone, but it is even more important and necessary for those of us who are Christians and Catholics. We live at a time and in a culture where most of our ideas, values and philosophy of life, that might have been taken for granted at one time, are now questioned and ridiculed from within and without our own Catholic Faith. Not only must we struggle to keep our minds and hearts set on the goal of being as good and holy as we possibly can, but must now use much energy in defending the very principles of our Christian Faith, life and values.
A Spiritual Retreat is that kind of experience that helps us to keep awake and vigilant, strong and informed as to the Truth we must follow and the virtues we must practice to fulfill the words of Jesus: “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect”
